Traveling to Orlando with children is almost synonymous with theme parks. But what if we told you that it's possible to experience a different Orlando, with more nature, culture, history and even a touch of slow travel?
That's exactly what I was looking for on my last trip with my family: to find the "B side" of Orlando. And I can tell you that it was well worth it. Here are some of the most interesting discoveries - all possible to fit into a 10 to 12 day itinerary in the region:
1. Winter Garden (20 min from Orlando)

A charming town that looks like something out of an American sitcom. Ideal for a quiet stroll with a local market, cafés, an independent bookshop and welcoming architecture.
2. St. Augustine (2h drive)

The oldest city in the United States offers castles, museums, carriages and cultural festivals. A plunge into the country's colonial history.
3. DeLand (1h drive)

A haven for artists and creatives, with a young atmosphere and cultural alternatives. Close to two natural wonders:
- Blue Springs State Park
- De Leon Springs State Park
4. Crystal River (1h30 from Orlando)

It is the only place in the world where you can swim with manatees. It also has trails, rivers and crystal-clear springs.
5. Clearwater (1h40 from Orlando)

White sand beach and calm sea, ideal for families. Good infrastructure and easy access from Orlando.
6. Downtown Orlando and surroundings

- Orlando Museum of Art
- Harry P. Leu Gardens
- Orlando Science Center
- International Drive, with restaurants, bars and stores
If you want to experience a trip to Florida with more authenticity, balance and meaning, consider including some of these places in your itinerary. A trip to Disney can be enchanting - but it can also be more than that.
